Isn't it a bit ironic?

Dangerous additive found in heroin in U.S. That is the title of an article I was reading this weekend. It struck me as funny. Not that heroin use is funny, but isn’t heroin in itself dangerous?

I read on to see what is making heroin even more dangerous. Apparently traces of clenbuterol have been found in the urine of several reported heroin users. This is a drug that promotes lean muscle growth in cattle. Clenbuterol is illegal in the United States and the number of cases that has been linked with this drug is growing rapidly. Many of the people that got sick developed dangerously rapid heart rates and palpitations, chest pain and low blood pressure. The majority said they had snorted rather than injected what they thought was heroin before becoming sick.

I didn’t even know heroin could be snorted; I thought it was injected. *cringe* Then I learned that due to the drug being developed in a more pure form, has enabled users to snort it instead of injecting it. Thus, causing an explosion of heroin use in the US during th 1990s.
It is thought that some of the cases where the users got sick that it was possible they had taken pure clenbuterol that was sold to them as heroin.

Imagine a drug dealer doing that, wouldn’t that be unheard of? I would think that if you are dealing in a world of illicit material, that there would be rules of honesty, morality, virtue, etc., right? I don’t agree that people should deceive anyone no matter what the situation. Then again, I don’t agree in the whole illegal drug scene and self destruction of one's mind and body. Isn’t there even an unspoken set of principles amongst themselves? I think it is terrible that people are getting sick from an additive in their heroin.

But, isn’t it a bit ironic, don’t people get sick from the heroin itself?

Very ironic.

What I find unfortunate these days is that kids are trading prescription drugs. They get them from their parents, and sell them for $5.00 a pills.

It's sad, really.

The desire for altered states is normal, it's just the way people are, very little control.
Self control is a discipline, and discipline is what people lack, the discipline to eat right and excercise, to fill their minds with knowledge, to empathise with others, the discipline to experiment with drugs and know when to quit, the discipline to regulate drugs with understanding.

I agree, it's such a sad thing. We're losing the war on drugs, spending more and more each year and falling further and further behind.

I think anyone who would do heroine is about half a bubble off anyway.

One more thing. Legalize marijuana. Please. We spend way too many resources trying to police it, when we could be spending time keeping REAL drugs off the street... such as clenbuterol-laced heroine.

I think that whole article was describing and easy way to "thin the herd"

Fred - Wow! The lure of easy money! It is sad.

Ticharu - I knew I could count on you for some good insight, thanks!

Zombie - I know, it really makes me *cringe*

Dave - You know, I guess some kids are searching for happiness and think they have found it when in an altered state. Just think if they put all the revenues from legalized marajuana towards funding school or medicine or something, how good that would be.

Badgod - you have an interesting point!

Carl - No integrity in the drug dealing business, huh? That is scary!

Okay, I get that heroin is illegal and I have seen the television specials on how that gets in the US, but HOW the heck are they getting clenbuterol?! Are our farmers really using it when they shouldn’t be??? Are we getting it when we eat beef and drink milk? THAT’S SCARY!

The almighty dollar is a powerful god. Always has and always been. Heroin was snorted way before it was ever injected. The invention of the syringe made injection the preferred method. Heroin and cocaine have been around for a very long time. Most of our famous presidents of old used cocaine, it was an off the shelf item prior to the 1940's.

The illegalization of anything makes that thing subjectable to price gouging and forgeries. One of bad side affects of Prohibition was that dealers were siphoning off a cup of liquor out of each bottle and replacing it with rubbing alcohol.
Some people got really sick....

Shawnee - Hi! Thanks for stopping by. And you are right, I don't think we really know of a lot that goes on.

Mojo - Yes, you are right. Absolutely no honor at any cost.

It made me laugh to hear that "Dangerous additive found in heroin"..... LOL, that's what you get for doing heroin! It's like what's the word, an oxymoron, isn't heroin itself a dangerous additive, or it can be used as one at least. I have known people to lace pot with it. Awful freaking stuff!

Rebecca - yeah, the title is what grabbed my attention as well!

This problem seems to be ubiquitous..

also sick to think about what goes in meth. it's one of the worst drug problems our country has ever seen and it started here and unlike the other major illegal narcotics, it is destroying rural areas more than urban ones.
it's sick to think that latern, muriatic acid (HCl) acetone, methanol and lye go into cooking and that recipes can be found all over the internet and the items needed make it can be bought at wal-mart. no wonder law enforcement is having such a hard time getting control over this epidemic.

mojoala said...

Muriatic Acid? Is that why I can't find that anymore?

That's what I use to lower the PH in my swimming pool.

Now I really hate the meth labs even much more....

Hi avik - yes, you are right

echeevo72 - I know, I guess it is almost like fighting a losing battle.

mojoala - is that one of those "over the counter" items that now has to be signed and accounted for?

Dave, I find it interesting that you dismiss marijuana as being a "harmless" drug that should be legalized (thereby putting faith in the discretion of individual users), but consider heroin and other "harsh" drugs to be something completely different.

Yes, the two drugs do different things, but I find it funny that heroin has such a stigma attached to it. It was legal in North America up until the early twentieth-century, after all, but was outlawed along with its sister substance, raw opium. Fun fact: "Heroin" is actually a brand name and was first manufactured by the Bayer company at the end of the nineteeth-century.

I don't think it makes sense to pick and choose when it comes to drugs. The best way to look at it is to contrast the illegal substances with the legal ones. Alcohol, cigarettes and any number of over-the-counter medication can fuck a person up in no time if they're not careful, and the same is true of drugs like heroin. If used in moderation, all accounts say that it's a heavenly release (provided you have a reliable supplier, of course)--not to mention an effective pain-killer. Overdosing is a non-issue if you're careful, and studies have shown that it takes weeks of constant use for the body to become physically dependent.

And yes, Lee Ann, you can snort heroin. What the drug has to do is absorb into the bloodstream, and there are many ways to do that, but some are more effective than others. Snorting drugs is effective because the capillaries in the nose quickly absorb the drug and send it to the brain. You can also eat opiates, but it takes longer for them to work, since they have to make their way to the intenstine for absorption. You can take the "back road" as a shortcut and shove it up your ass as a suppository, but that's obviously not the classiest route.

Intravenous obviously the most effective option, but you run the risk of pushing a little too hard on the plunger and never waking up.

I think smoking the stuff would be choice, personally.
