Managing Stress

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked,
"How heavy is this glass of water?"

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied,
"The absolute weight doesn't matter."
It depends on how long you try to hold it.
"If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.
If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance."

"In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."
He continued,
"And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on. "

"As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden. "

"So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can."

Relax; pick them up later after you've rested.
Life is short.
Enjoy it!

Ok, tell me.....
........What are some stress relievers????
I have a few, I will share mine, but I want to hear some of yours!
My first one, is....
**I have an excellent foot roller. I put it on the floor and roll my bare foot on it. Man, that is awesome!
**Hot hot shower, then some Moonlight Path body lotion ~smells of fresh lavender and jasmine.
**Hot chocolate (chocolate always makes me feel better)
** .....ok your turn, you tell me a few!

Thank God this blog is working again! For days it's been like Groundhog Day here in Edinburgh. Everytime I clicky on, it's been Valentine's Day in Alabama. Hump day and constant Valentine's Day. What are these Americans up to? Anyway, the buddha held up a glass of water (glass? maybe a pot) and said there are 84,000 bits to this. (I think that just means lots!)Smart guy that buddha boy. Said stress management was about emptiness. But if you don't know what emptiness is, how are you supposed to manage it? Nice to see you back as well. Hotboy

Hotboy ~ Thank you.
I am glad it is not Groundhog day over there anymore.
I really don't know what day I would pick if I had to repeat it.
Hump day...haha, yeah, that does seem strange that we refer to Wednesday that way...speaking of that ~ here we are on another hump day today!
Emptiness is so stressful and it can be very hard to manage, even if you do know what emptiness is.

I go to 711 and buy a large cherry icee.

Or I drive down the highway casually swearing at everyone knowing that they cannot hear what I'm saying.

Lee Ann said...

Hippo ~ Oh, the icee, my mom used to buy the cola ones for us when we were sick! Always made me feel better. Yeah, I could see how the swearing might be a reliever.

Jef ~ Of course, that one I was waiting for! I was going to say that one, but I figured I would wait to see who would bring it up! ;)
Very nice!

My mother in law always told me that as she drove home from work, she had a billboard she always looked for. When she saw that billboard, she would consciously 'leave her burdens there', to be picked up on the way to work the next day.

It never worked for me, but it sounded great!

My stress reliever was starting up my own businesses. Now, they can be stressful, no doubt, but it's a better stress, usually. When it gets more than I can stand, I listen to jazz, burn or even make a couple of candles, putter about in my kitchen, clean something, blog, or read a good book.

please go to my blog today and get the addys for the different gov't. officials listed there. Then write to beg them to do something concerning the sale to Dubai Ports World of the security contract for 7 of the ports in the United States. This is a very serious issue which directly affects those of us that live in the Bay Area here.

1. Write music or just beat the shit out of an instrument.
2. Go for a walk or a drive.
3. Sex is good as long as the person who is stressing you out is not your sex partner.
4. Have a drink!

A cocktail, jazz music, things like that. Talking to a friend.

I punch somebody

Lee Ann said...

Saur ~ That is a good idea, if you can let yourself leave your troubles in a certain spot. I imagine having your own businesses is stressful, but you are right, that is a different kind of stress (but stress nevertheless). Burning candles is one of my things too.

Andy ~ Music, very good, yes!

Dave ~ Oh yes, I think having a cocktail while talking to a friend with a little soft jazz in the background sounds very relaxing!

Emily ~ I understand what you mean about staying too busy to notice. I was going through that when I worked my second job (which ended up being almost a 2nd fulltime job). When I quit that, it reduced my stress level quite a bit, but there always seems to be some sort of stress that creeps in. Relax.... ;)

Lee Ann said...

Tich ~ oh! Well, I don't really see you doing that! I imagine that would make things more stressful for me...haha

Lee Ann said...

Boo ~ I am with you on those! ;)

I'm with you on the chocolate thing! Nothing better than a nice cup of hot chocolate... and throwing something. (I always make sure it's something that won't break... and throw it at something that won't break).

Of course swearing works real good too!

b o o said...

you're psychic! blogger is blonde *lol* we are dancing around eachother. woohoo :)

Lee Ann said...

Ellen ~ Ah, throwing something! I have thought of doing stuff like that, but my luck, it would probably bounce back and knock me in the head! We do love our chocolate don't we!

Boo ~ Hahaha, bet you didn't know that about me, that I am psychic! hehe

I'm a Tai Chi guy-
when that fails,
I go to the scotch and a joint.

Becky said...

I could use those stress relieving tips about now. Sorry for not stopping by in a while, been either sick or uber busy at work.

Sex is the best stress reliever!

Lee Ann said...

Poly ~ Thai...ummm!
Scotch, yes, that would do it (I only like scotch if it is with a sour mix).

Becky ~ Oh, I am sorry you have been sick and stressed. No worries, I know you love me...hehe!
Yes, I like your way of dealing with stress.
Relax and feel better! ;)

I hit the gym 4-5 times a week to help with my stress. And on the weekends I bang out a few beers, nothing like a good beer buzz to make work seem small and pointless lol.

Board games are my primary stress reliever. That and masturbation.

Lee Ann said...

Ellen jay ~ Hi! I am glad you found your way over here, so nice to see you. I think stress is unavoidable in this day and age....a nice massage would probably help too! I hope you will come by more often, you are welcome here anytime.

Honkeie ~ Working out! Yes, a great stress reliever...I think I am going to join a gym. A little buzz does relieve the stress too, doesn't it! haha

Lee Ann said...

Jiggs ~ Board games....I would have never guessed you for a board game type of guy! I have heard that masturbation is a great stress reliever, it is definitely a reliever! ;)

Lee Ann - Wow, I like that stress manager guys theory.

I love people that think outside the box.

You're right, reminds me of a thing I heard on the radio this morning about how stressed out people are these days. They blamed it on "Multi-tasking."

I usually crank my tunes to relieve stress, or play guitar and sing. Writing helps as well.

Peace & Hugs,

- Neo

Lee Ann said...

Neo ~ Oh, I am sure when you are singing and playing the guitar that is a great stress reliever. I know listening to you would be a great one for me! ;)

*hugs*

You have no idea how great your post was to read today. I am stressed to the max. I am going to try to leave it all at work and go home to my backed-up bath tub. Aahhh!
Here are the things I do to releave stress:
Masturbation is good, alcohol and a long drive. Preferably the drive before the alcohol, but whatever works for ya!

JM said...

I've always heard leave your troubles at the door. This way you don't carry them into your home with you.

Lee Ann said...

Tumble ~ Oh, I am glad it has helped. Yeah, leave those nasty stresses at work...a nice hot bath...how soothing. I have heard all of those things are good at making you relax!

Angel ~ Exactly, now if we can practice what we hear, right?

Hotboy said...

Stress? If you want to get a break from this and that, you could always sink your mind into ra awesome bliss. I nearly lost my body in the one I was in today. Mental calming is the name of the game. Doing hatha yoga and tai chi gets it out of your body. Some playful hanky panky would doubtless help too! Hotboy

Lee Ann said...

Hotboy ~ Thank you for such good advice.
Definitely worth checking into!

A good reliever is BICYCLING, but when its too COLD out here in frigging cold ass MINNESOTA, then a porno and some handcream does the trick.

Speaking of which, I can't WAIT til HNT!

Music, singing, yoga, a hot shower, a nap.

Hmmm, I think I will do all of those RIGHT NOW!

I do enjoy a hot bath while some good rock n roll is playing.

Lee Ann said...

Twolf ~ You are a bicyclist...I used to ride a lot when I lived in Florida, it was a great stress reliever.

SG ~ I have never done Yoga, I have been told I would like it. I do love all of those other things you mentioned.

Jams ~ You are right, blogging relaxes me too!

AI ~ Hot bath with any music that you enjoy is wonderful!

Alternating hot and cold showers, of course.

Walking the dog over the hills, with Led Zep or similar on the headphones.

Meditating about all the poor souls who have to meditate to relax.

I'm at work now so I won't click your HNT till I get home (I got here to this post via bloglines).

Lee Ann said...

Rob ~ Oh, alternating hot and cold showers sounds interesting! Yes, a good walk with the dogs would be something to take your mind off stress...good music!
Oh, bloglines, I will have to check that out!

I assumed you already used bloglines, or something like it, to alert you when all your favourite blogs have new posts. It works well.
