Now this is interesting!

I used to think history was boring. I'm not proud to admit, but history was the one class that I napped in. In fact, that was where I learned how to nap without being noticed. It was all in the stacked books technique. Now that I am not being tested on the material, I have somehow, learned to enjoy history. When I came across this, I found it to be really intriguing.
Have a history teacher explain this----- if they can.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.
Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.
Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.
Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.
Now it gets really weird.
Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.
Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.
Now hang on to your seat.
Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'
Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.
Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.
And here's the kicker...
A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland.
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.

Now that is cool!

Also, I want to know the secretaries first names.

They say that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Kennedy should have been able to connect the dots.

mad hatter - if you find out the secretaries first names, let me know. Thanks for stopping by.

gyrobo - hi! Yes, you are right. You know what is said about hind sight, it is always 20/20.

There is article on this story at snopes.com

http://www.scopes.com/history/american/lickenn.htm

It kind of kills the whole connection thing though.

It is interesting.

You should have said, "A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland; a week before Kennedy was shot, he was in Marilyn Monroe."

It's more accurate, and it reads a little better.

The only major problem with that list is that everyone knows Oswald was a patsy.

badgod - i will definitely check that out...thanks

ticharu - yeah, in the "Twilight Zone" lol

wino mchackenpuke - hey! thanks for stopping by. I thought about doing that, and I thought the same as you that it would be more acurate and read better, but thought it might not sound so good coming from a girl. But you are definitely right, it is funnier :) thanks again.

Oh man... badgod ruined it for me! Snopes is a great place to test all those urban myths, coincidences, etc. for veracity.

Okay, back to the beer.

Love it! I'm a history teacher and can't explain it. I think that's actually a good thing.

Are you watching Katrina?

Lee Ann said...

dave - have one for me!

fred - I know they say that many of these are only surface coincidences, but it is still quite fascinating to me!

ticharu - yes, Katrina is heading my way :( Hopefully not directly, but we will probably gets some bad storms here from it! I get terribly scared of these bad storms. I lived in South Florida when Andrew hit. I am a scaredycat.

I remember when I was little, I found one of those pennies with the JFK head carved into it. I thought it was like a one-of-a-kind thing, and then I found out later that there are several of them out there. It's still kind of neat though. I still have it. I was kind of hoping that I could sell it and retire a wealthy woman, but they're only worth a buck right now. You can buy them along with a list of all those "strange coincidences".

beckeye - realistically that is not a bad return. $1 for a penny! Cool to have something like that.
