Rock-a-bye Husband?

An unusual contest is held in the northeastern state of Kelantan, Malaysia. The Islamic government will hold a lullaby contest for women to sing their husbands to sleep. The government is trying to change their assertive image by organizing the first pop music concert in the state for 15 years.
They feel this contest will make families stronger.
The chief minister, Nik Aziz Nik Mat said "This is important. For example, a husband returns home tired and when the wife sings to him, he can sleep soundly. When he awakes, he is a happy man and this will help build a great relationship between husband and wife. We will have judges to evaluate the songs."
There would be requirements of dress and song choice for the contestants.
This is truly a different perspective of a lullaby. This is what I think of when I hear lullaby... a sweet little baby...

How would you like your significant other to sing you to sleep?

Sorry, but I just think that would be funny, not soothing!

Lee Ann- I popped over to your blog from Neos.
I read through your posts and got a great chuckle about the GYN visit. Haven't we all experienced that? (I waited so long one time, that I literally took a nap on the table).
Anyhow, just wanted you to know that I enjoyed your stories, and loved the pictures as well.
Good work!

Forget the singing me to sleep...I'd rather have my wife run her fingers through the hair on my head...that makes me fall right asleep.

Justice, man that's exactly right. That would put me straight to dreamland.

As far as Malaysia, isn't it refreshing to see a government actually trying to build families. I think a lot of anti-family groups should travel overseas and see how the rest of the world feels about families.

ellen ~ Hey! Thank you for stopping by. I know, we all suffer a little humility with the GYN, don't we? Thank you! Come by again!

justice ~ ah, now that's what I'M talking about! Just the other night my boyfriend was gently rubbing my foot with his and holding my hand, and I fell right to sleep. The hair thing is excellent. I just think it is so funny trying to picture that contest. Do you think they have to actually be singing the lullaby to their husband during the contest?

Jef ~ oh yes, my boyfriend has actually calmed me out of a migraine by gently rubbing my head and running his fingers through my hair.
I was thinking the same thing as far as how different their approach is toward families from what is done here.

Lee Ann - Well, that all depends on how good her singing is.

If she sounds like Peter Brady from the Brady Bunch when he hit puberty, then no. I'd be waking up with nightmares of Marsha getting hit in the nose with the football.

Now if she sounded like Sarah McLachlan, then hell yeah!!

;)

Neo ~ You are funny! I think for me, it would be too distracting to drift off to sleep. If it were lousy, I wouldn't be able to relax enough to sleep. If it were wonderful, I would be too enthralled, and want to stay awake to listen! If I had the choice, it would be the wonderful, at least I would be happily awake! ;)

Lee Ann: Too weird to be true! You'll be telling us next that women in Malaysia can cook meals and wash the dishes, and all that stuff. You won't find one of them around these parts anymore. It's men who wear the skirts in Scotland. And all that comes out is a horrible squeaky noise when I try to sing. Hotboy

Those women should just be screaming at their mates, not singing. "I am not a slave..."
What happens if the wife can't sing so good? Does she get beaten? We are not talking about equality here. We are talking about a patriarchal system in which women have no rights what-so-ever. The Malaysian government is trying to put a happy veneer on the ugly truth , brainwash the next generation, and distract people from the dire situation they are in.
Well... what did you think I'd say? Hahahaha!
Singing is good... slavery is bad...

I think the lullabye thing is great. but you have a barrier against it ever working for most. Too many men would think singing a lullabye to a spouse would be to wussifying. 99% of women would do it, but probably only 5% of the men would reciprocate....

Er, Wife-Slave who now wants to be known as Man Eating Wife-Slave, but I just call her Blog Widow, has set me straight... She says that of all the Muslim countries, Malasya is probably the best in terms of women's rights. She advised me to relax, and then she started singing...

lee ann, the only way i would do this is if you sang me a song. then jumped into bed with me...naked.

Lee Ann said...

Hotboy ~ Haha, I still want to see those men in skirts! Truly I do!

Tich ~ Well, when she started singing, did it help? Did you relax, then drift off....? ;)

Mojo ~ hmmm....I wouldn't mind me singing the lullaby, I just can't imagine the guy singing! ;)

Zombie ~ So that is what puts you in Zombieland...a little fingers through the hair! Nice!

Carl ~ Ok! I'm game! But you have to do the same for me!

My better half often sings to me when I'm tired but as she has the voice of a hard rockin' sex goddess with guttarel undertones devoid of morals and boundaries..I have no choice but to do what a man has to do...make her a hot drink of honey and lemon.

All depends on what the 'little lady' is singing...
If it's "Moon River" I barf.
If it's "smoke on the water" I rock
If its "je taime" I make monkey love into the wee small hours..and sometimes I do this with the 'little lady' instead of the neighbour.

Hey Jimi! That is awesome! That is so sweet of you. I love to sing. I sing to my boyfriend a lot. But I don't know if I can call it a lullaby. Most of the time it doesn't make him fall asleep *blushing* ;)

ed ~ Hey! Thanks for stopping by. Ah, very clever of you! monkey love, eh? haha Come back by again.

I once sang "Some Velvet Morning" by Lee Hazlewood to my ex-boyfriend before he slept. He thought that was cool. The last thign i sang to my hubby was the theme song to the Mary Tyler Moore show. I'm a dork!

LA - there is a handsome man in a skirt here.

Reading between the lines, maybe you should choose a less raunchy song to sing to your boyfriend. You're wearing him out.

My partner sings like Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. Technically musical, but not relaxing. I sang happy birthday to her at the weekend, but that's my limit.

robmcj said...

There's someone called Mary J Blige who could sing to me any time, but I'm not sure we'd get much sleep. ;)

Lee Ann said...

Rob ~ Ah yes, I remember that picture of the scotsman in a "skirt"! Very nice. I would love to see my boyfriend in a kilt...he too is Scottish! Maybe you really do understand my singing to bf! ;) As you said about Mary J. Blige, you wouldn't get much sleep! *giggling*
